Gordon Brown - Chancellor of the Exchequer - UK Government

Reasons for his admission to our Hall of Shame

Full of promises - short on delivery

Since taking up his post as Chancellor he has made a shameful mess out of taxation policies and has increased taxes, many by stealth and deception, above the level of any previous Chancellor in recent history. He has totally failed in his many promises to relieve poverty in our society. Indeed the less off, are now worse off since he became Chancellor. He has substantially contributed to the demise of family values, the promotion of marriage and a stable family life by abolishing the married persons allowance. He displays little knowledge of the problems of running a home, which often means that a wife cannot properly fulfil the role of both homemaker, mother and a go to work.

Our present taxation is now in such a mess that those charged with its administration are unable to do so. During a live conference reported on television on 23rd October 2004 called, 'A Third Term Worth Fighting For'. He spoke of the problems of resolving poverty. Whereas he has been directly responsible for causing much of it. He openly spoke of, "justice for all" - whereas in reality he has proved to be a master of causing such injustice.

During this same address he referred to 'Child Poverty' and further that it was the Government's responsibility to eradicate pensioner poverty. Yet he is the very person who has caused it. He then went on to admit, "We have the worst social programme in Europe with regard to children". Mr. Brown have the worst social programme - full stop. This short-sighted and incompetent Chancellor, when attempting to bring in any social reform, only makes matters worse. The cost of your reforms are, not only more costly to administer, but often quite maliciously deny many of those whom you suggest should receive it. Consider the take up of the Pensions Credit for example - it is estimated that in excess of 3 million pensioners, perfectly entitled to claim it, do not receive it. The main reason - the callous, over bureaucratic, excessive paperwork needed to claim it. Was this newly introduced "administrative procedure "accidental"? No Mr Brown it was introduced quite intentionally knowing that much of the potential expenditure would remain safely in the Treasury´s bank account.

Conclusions and recommendations

Our Chancellor is too full of himself. He is arrogant and to all to ready to dismiss the opinion of others. He has consistently ignored advice from all organisations associated with the welfare of the elderly. These organisations have for decades advised our successive Governments, that a proper solution to getting 'rid of the evil of poverty' needs to be found. This would then ensure that every pensioner received an income so as to be able to spend their last years with dignity. It is now common knowledge that Gordon Brown does not communicate with Tony Blair - in fact the pair seem to detest one another. He clearly displays deceit, arrogance, incompetence and total ignorance of the needs of pensioners - he should do the decent thing and resign with immediate effect.

As for the prospect of him becoming Prime Minister - please Gordon spare us further pain and quietly retire to live your remaining days in your home land - as far away from Westminster and Public life as possible.
